LATA and Exchange Map
A Local Access and Transport Area (LATA) defines geographical boundaries of local telephone service networks. The LATA boundaries are drawn by the federal government and determine which phone companies can provide local and toll service for each area.
- Local exchange service provides calling within an exchange. An exchange is a specified area that usually encompasses a city, town, or village and its environs. Several adjacent exchanges combine to form a LATA.
- Local toll service (also called intraLATA, local long distance, or regional toll service) provides calling within a LATA.
- Long distance toll service (interLATA) includes all calls outside the local exchange and local toll service areas. This includes calls that originate in one LATA and terminate in another and international calls. Long distance toll calls can be between two LATAs in the same state or between LATAs in different states.
